GWO Fire Awareness

GWO Fire Awareness

About This Course

Fire in a wind turbine environment presents a serious risk due to confined spaces, electrical installations, hydraulic systems and limited escape routes. Rapid and correct decision-making is critical to prevent escalation and protect personnel.

The BST Fire Awareness Module, delivered in accordance with GWO BST V19, provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify fire hazards, prevent fire incidents and respond appropriately if a fire occurs.

Participants learn the fundamentals of combustion, fire spread and fire gases, including the fire triangle and fire classes. The training covers how to assess a fire, determine whether it is safe to intervene and select the correct extinguishing media. If a fire is judged to be unmanageable, participants are trained to initiate evacuation procedures and ensure all personnel are safely accounted for.

Practical exercises include inspection and correct use of basic handheld firefighting equipment. Scenario-based training reflects realistic wind turbine situations where participants must evaluate risk, act independently and apply safe firefighting techniques at intermediate ability level.

The focus is prevention first, controlled response second and safe evacuation when necessary.

Learning Objectives

After successful completion of the GWO BST Fire Awareness Module, participants will be able to:

  • Identify fire hazards in a wind turbine environment
  • Understand the fire triangle, fire spread mechanisms and fire gases
  • Classify fires according to fire classes
  • Assess a fire situation and determine appropriate response
  • Select the correct extinguishing media for different fire classes
  • Perform pre-use inspection of basic handheld firefighting equipment
  • Safely and efficiently extinguish an initial fire, if judged safe
  • Manage evacuation procedures during an unmanageable fire
  • Ensure personnel are accounted for following evacuation
  • Take responsibility for fire prevention and safe behaviour at intermediate ability level

Requirements

Participants must:

  • Be medically fit to participate in practical training
  • Be physically capable of handling basic firefighting equipment
  • Have a valid WINDA ID prior to certification

No prior firefighting certification is required.

Target Audience

This module is intended for personnel who:

  • Work or will work in the wind industry
  • Perform duties inside or around wind turbine generator (WTG) structures
  • Have job functions risk assessed by their employer as requiring GWO Fire Awareness training

This includes technicians, installation crews, service personnel, supervisors and other operational staff exposed to fire risk.

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will receive:

  • Official GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) Fire Awareness certification
  • Registration in the WINDA database
  • Certification validity: 24 months, in accordance with GWO requirements
